When the surface wears, it can be sanded and refinished several times instead of being torn out, and most hardwood floors can be refinished up to six times before they need replacing.
Good to know before you buy
- Solid vs. engineered: both are real wood on top. Your installer can tell you which suits your subfloor and room.
- Prefinished vs. site-finished: prefinished boards arrive already sealed. Unfinished boards are sanded, stained and coated after installation, which allows a custom color.
- Underlayment: hardwood is typically installed over felt or a vapor barrier. Ask your installer which your project needs.
Care and upkeep
Clean with a cleaner made for hardwood, and put felt pads under furniture legs. When the floor starts to look tired, a professional refinisher can restore the color and fix gaps and squeaks, which typically costs far less than a full replacement.
